The
Five, a Mary MacIntosh novel
Character
Description: Note: first five characters are “The
Five” who were college roommates at University of Colorado, Boulder.
Boulder is a very progressive, liberal, outdoorsy community on the
outskirts of Denver. The Five unite in Boulder and head up the
mountains to a “hippie” community in Nederlands, Colorado for a
10-year college reunion. All five ladies are approximately 35 years old.
1.
Mary MacIntosh:
(goes by “Mac” and vision Julia Roberts with a brain) tall,
5’9”, auburn hair, brown eyes, smart, pretty outgoing, attorney
who is very athletic, loves to run and hike and play basketball.
She lives in Wyoming (although born in Colorado into a wealthy family
so she is very classy). Married recently to a cowboy named Wyatt
– who looks like the Marlboro Man (handsome) and they have a
budding, optimistic, romantic love.
2.
Hesta Knotingham:
Hesta is a New Yorker to a “T” and is an editor for publishing
company. She is medium-build, 5’6”, thin but not in good
physical shape, dark long hair, a smoker, snotty, snooty, edgy, with
attitude galore. She complains about the outdoors and doesn’t
enjoy exercise. She is married to a trust-funder (John) who is a
“writer” and he is lazy. They share no love and she is at a
cross-roads with him emotionally. They have no children.
3.
Rema Setliff: Rema
is an ultra-athlete (competes in ultra marathons and triathlons).
She lives in Denver and is married to an ex-professional football
player. Rema is as lean as possible (skinny), in amazing
physical shape, has cropped, spiky short, dark hair and blue eyes.
Her skin is a bit leathery due to training outdoors all day. She
does not make much money as a professional athlete and relies on her
asshole of a husband for money. Other than athletics, the two of
them have nothing in common and the relationship is dead. He is
very handsome and known to be a playboy. They have no kids.
4.
Patti Poeny: Patti
is a school teacher in Boise, Idaho. She has “let herself
go” in that she is out of shape, pudgy, about 5’7” with
mousy-blond hair, blue eyes (she used to be very attractive before she
went frump). She is married to her college sweetheart (Bob) who
used to be a school teacher but now is a successful real estate agent.
Bob has recently dropped weight, got in shape, and Patti suspects that
he is having an affair. Patti and Bob have three children ages
16, 14, and 12.
5.
Melanie Dylan: Melanie
is a very hip Hemp clothing designer who lives in Berkeley,
California. She is cute, athletic, 5’4” and very fit.
She is muscular and dresses in Eco-fashion. She is blond with
blue eyes and freckles (youthful). She is married to Michael, an
attorney, who is handsome but passive/aggressive. They met at
Berkeley in graduate school. They have two boys ages 8 and 6.
He is jealous of her successes and wants to move as he is frustrated
with his work.
6.
Chandler Craig: (the
killer) is young (21), handsome, tall with dark-longish hair and light
eyes. He is physically fit (as he has been in juvenile detention
since age 14 for killing people). He has a baby face so he looks
trust-worthy, yet he is bubbling with anger on the inside, as he has a
huge “chip on his shoulder” and is a “bad seed” type of kid
who tortures animals for pleasure.
7.
Nellie Monlock:
Nellie is an elderly woman (80’s) who has lived independently in the
mountains for decades after her husband died. She is strong,
large, independent, smart and terribly funny. She loves to
“embibe” and makes her own liquors, which are strong! She is
about 5’8”, heavy set and German looking, with gray hair and
glasses. She walks with a cane sometimes, but can still get
around and take care of herself. She has her wits about her and
is old enough to figure things out quickly as she has a sort of a
“sixth sense” about people.
8.
Sheriff: The
Sheriff is a pretty mellow guy who is a single “mountain man” who
loves his assignment because he gets to live in the mountains and fish
and hunt and work in a community that has very little crime. He
is in his 50’s, in great physical shape, weathered, kinda decent
looking in the outdoor-charm realm, and is annoyed when he is bothered
while fishing. He is a bit of a “loner” yet everyone in this
tight-knit community loves him. Friendly and outgoing.
9.
Old Man Lee: Old
Man Lee’s is never “seen” in the book, but is known as a recluse
and rarely seen in town. If he is seen, he is flipping people
off and cussing them out. He is known to be a hard-core drinker
(cheap whiskey) and has a proclivity to shoot anything close to his
property line. If you enter his property, be in the mood to be
confronted by the long barrel of a shotgun. I imagine his with
some missing teeth, smelly, dirty, thin, and rough looking.
